The short answer
Both apps record on your iPhone and both turn speech into text you can search. The difference is what you can do afterwards. Mnemo adds Ask, which answers a question from the matching passages; a raw transcript kept apart from your corrections; a choice of transcription engine and language, including languages outside Voice Memos’ list; speaker naming; and several export formats.

“Not described” means the Apple guide we cite does not mention the feature; it is not a claim that Voice Memos lacks it. Apple updates iOS every year, so check the guide for the version you use.

When Voice Memos is enough
- You record now and then and listen back to the whole thing.
- One transcript per recording covers what you need.
- You want nothing extra installed and nothing to configure.
- You record in one of its languages, and searching titles and transcripts is enough.
When Mnemo adds something
- You want to ask “what did we decide about the budget?” across many conversations and see the passages that answer it, then open the exact moment.
- You record in a language outside Voice Memos’ list, or want to choose the transcription engine yourself.
- You quote people and need the raw words kept apart from your edits, with the audio one tap away.
- You want to choose the transcription engine or language, re-transcribe later, or export subtitles and Markdown.
- You want Meeting, Interview, Quick note and Dictation sessions, or an optional Notebook that keeps text and deletes audio after 24 hours.
Use both
They are not exclusive. You can keep recording in Voice Memos and open a recording in Mnemo from the share menu when you need it searchable, or when you want to ask about it later. Mnemo transcribes the imported file on the device.

Yes, per Apple’s iPhone User Guide: on iPhone 12 or later in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Korean and Chinese, not in all regions. It can also search transcriptions.

For what comes after the transcript: ask a question and open the exact passage and audio, keep raw and corrected text apart, choose the engine and language, name speakers and export subtitles or Markdown.
Can Mnemo open my Voice Memos recordings?
Yes. Share or open an audio file from Voice Memos, Files or Mail in Mnemo, and it is transcribed on the device.
Is Mnemo free?
The app is free with no recording quota. Pro, configured but not yet on sale, adds larger on-device models and neural speaker separation.
