Why people look for a bot-free option
Many meeting assistants work by joining the call as a participant. That suits some teams, but not every situation: an in-person meeting has no call to join, a client may not want an unfamiliar participant in the list, and some organisations do not allow third-party assistants in their meetings at all.
Recording on your own phone changes who is responsible. There is no service in the room, only you and a device everyone can see. That makes consent a conversation between people, which is usually where it belongs.
Consent comes first
Rules on recording differ by country and situation; in some places everyone present must agree. Say at the start that you are recording and why, for example to get the figures right in the minutes. Mnemo reminds you of this when you set it up and does not hide that it is recording.
Before the meeting
- Allow microphone access for Mnemo in iOS Settings, once.
- Download the free on-device model if you want Whisper rather than Apple Speech; see offline transcription on iPhone.
- Place the phone on the table, between the people who will speak most, away from laptop fans and cups.
- Start a Meeting session from the Record screen. Widgets and the Dynamic Island are there for quick starts and controls later.
During the meeting
Leave the phone alone. The Live Activity and Dynamic Island let you pause, resume, stop or add a bookmark without opening the app, and Control Center has a Bookmark control as well. Pause options include 15 minutes, an hour or until tomorrow. If an off-the-record aside happens, you can forget the last 5 or 15 minutes.
After the meeting
- Open the conversation. The transcript is made on your iPhone; recordings are never sent to a speech service.
- Review speakers: name, merge or unlink them. With Pro, neural speaker separation runs on the device first; it is still a review step.
- Run the Meeting minutes Skill if you want a written draft. Skills need Apple Intelligence on iOS 26 or an AI key you connect yourself; Skills you set to run automatically always use the on-device model.
- Send confirmed commitments to Reminders, and export the transcript as Markdown, TXT, SRT, WebVTT or PDF.
- Weeks later, search the meeting or ask a question and open the exact passage; see finding the exact moment.
What about video calls?
Mnemo records what the iPhone’s microphone hears. It does not connect to Zoom, Teams or Meet and has no calendar-driven joining. Limits
- Room recordings depend on placement and noise; Mnemo publishes no accuracy figures.
- Speaker separation is not identification: you confirm who said what.
- Written minutes need an AI provider as described above; without one you still have the full transcript and search.
- Mnemo is for iPhone and iPad with iOS 18 or later and is not yet on the App Store.

Can I transcribe a meeting without a bot joining?
