Most setup issues come from model selection, folder permissions, or trying to use a cloud provider before adding an API key.
Install or update
Use the Mac App Store when possible. Direct-download users should replace the old app with the latest DMG build and keep their local data folder intact.
Add documents
Choose files or folders from inside PaperMind. macOS may ask for permission before the app can index a selected folder.
Set up models
For private local chat, select a compatible local model in Settings. Cloud providers are optional and require your own API key.
Common fixes.
If something feels stuck, restart PaperMind first. If the issue remains, export diagnostics from Settings and send them with your email.
Documents are not indexing
- Check that the selected folder still exists.
- Grant file access again from the Add Documents screen.
- Try a small PDF or text file to isolate the issue.
Ask AI says a model is needed
- Open Settings and choose a local model.
- Confirm the model file is still on disk.
- Use a smaller GGUF model if memory is limited.
Full Unlock or restore fails
- Confirm you are signed in to the Mac App Store.
- Use Restore Purchases from the paywall or Settings.
- For App Store refunds, use Apple's refund process.
