One-glance comparison
| Approach | Best when | Typical trade-off | RainDesk 1.0 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop atmosphere | You want the workspace itself to feel different | Can become distracting if it blocks windows or clicks | 12 procedural effects behind windows; click-through by default |
| Ambient sound | Audio variety and mixing are the main need | Streaming, accounts or subscriptions may be required | 17 bundled layers mixed locally; no account or streaming |
| Pomodoro timer | A strict interval and break system drives the routine | The timer can become another interface to monitor | Optional 25 or 50 minutes with one short intention |
| Combined utility | You want atmosphere and a light timing ritual together | Less specialised than a full sound library or task manager | 21 scenes, menu bar controls, multi-display support |
Start with window behaviour
A desktop effect should remain subordinate to real work. Check whether it sits behind normal windows, passes clicks through, can be paused immediately and behaves predictably on multiple displays. RainDesk is designed around those Mac-specific constraints instead of placing a decorative layer over every app by default.
Decide whether sound is local or streamed
Sound apps can offer enormous catalogues, while a local bundle is smaller but works without an account or network connection. RainDesk uses 17 bundled sound layers selected and mixed for its scenes. It does not promise an open-ended music or meditation catalogue.
Use a timer only if the timer helps
A strict Pomodoro system is appropriate when break enforcement and history matter. RainDesk takes a lighter approach: add one short intention, choose no limit, 25 minutes or 50 minutes, and let the scene change carry the passage of time. It is not a task manager and does not claim a clinical outcome.
Check the data boundary and price
Compare the live App Store privacy label, the product policy and observable network activity. RainDesk has no account, analytics, telemetry, advertising, cloud processing or third-party SDK. It is configured as a USD 3.99 paid download with no subscription or in-app purchase; Apple controls regional price and availability.
