Which local AI music generator is best for a Mac?

SongForge, LocalMusic AI and Murmur all move generation onto Apple hardware, but they solve different jobs. This comparison uses narrow claims from current first-party product pages and clearly separates released features from roadmap work.

Short answer

Choose SongForge for full songs with vocals, source-based Rework, arrangement and a native Mac library. Choose LocalMusic AI when LoRA adapters, custom voice personas, stems, video and optional cloud generation matter more than a curated workflow. Choose Murmur for quick instrumental loops and soundtracks on iPhone or iPad, with compatible Apple-silicon Macs as a secondary surface.

What SongForge does better

Coherent Mac workflow

Create, Rework, Arrange, compare, play and export are connected through a local Library instead of presented as unrelated utilities.

Musical arrangement

Scenes, a beat timeline and playback mixer make generated takes material for an arrangement, not only files to download.

Wider OS support

SongForge documents macOS 14 or later; LocalMusic AI currently requires macOS 15 and Apple M1 or later.

Where SongForge is behind

LocalMusic AI currently advertises the stronger feature list. It exposes LoRA adapters, custom voice personas, reference audio, repainting, stems, an audio editor, video generation and an optional cloud path. SongForge should not pretend otherwise. Its current public advantage is workflow coherence, local privacy, Rework and Arrange—not model breadth.

Murmur is simpler for a narrow job. For an instrumental loop on a phone, its device-aware setup and focused promise are easier to understand than a full desktop song studio.

Does SongForge support LoRA or local training?

Current public answer: no.

The Mac App Store release does not expose LoRA adapters or model training. Development code or unreleased builds are not a product promise. SongForge currently supports compatible ACE-Step 1.5 GGUF model sets for local generation.

The useful product split is: importing and applying an adapter during generation is a lightweight creator feature; training a new adapter is a longer expert workflow with datasets, preprocessing, checkpoints and substantial compute. They should be released and documented separately.

What about Suno and Udio?

Suno and Udio are cloud music services, not direct local-Mac equivalents. Their strengths include zero local model setup, access from more devices and frequently updated hosted models. SongForge’s trade-off is a substantial initial model setup and hardware-dependent speed in exchange for a local standalone workflow. Read the separate SongForge vs Suno and SongForge vs Udio guides.
